Doha’s best weekend brunches

Oleh Ulrike Lemmin Woolfrey

In Doha, brunch isn’t a Sunday affair. With the weekend observed on Friday and Saturday, Fridays are rest days, much like Sunday in Western cultures. Over time, Friday brunches have become a local institution – long, leisurely meals with international menus, free-flowing drinks and often live entertainment. Here are some of my favourites, as an expat living in Doha.

Playful Chinese plates

The little sister of Michelin-starred Kai Mayfair in London, expect sophisticated Chinese cuisine in a spectacular setting at Kai’s Songbird. Right in the heart of the marina on Doha’s The Pearl Island, sit outside and watch the boats go by, or stay indoors and enjoy the quirky yet elegant décor. Highlights include playful baos – the mushroom bao looks like a real mushroom – along with pulled crispy duck, lettuce wraps and chilli prawns, followed by beautifully crafted desserts. kaisongbird.qa

Poolside spread

The “brunchcation” at The Ned hotel’s Malibu Kitchen pairs a relaxed ambience with one of Doha’s most photogenic pools. The spread includes everything from lobster and steak to local mezze, tacos and fresh seafood. A live singer sets the mood, making it a leisurely afternoon affair. thened.com

Mediterranean chic

Housed in the Ritz-Carlton’s former Admiral’s Club, B-Lounge has reinvented itself with a St Tropez-inspired Mediterranean brunch menu, accented by pan-Asian flavours and outstanding cocktails. The setting – surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Persian Gulf – enhances the laidback, lounge-style atmosphere. bloungedoha.com

Latin festive flair

Curiosa by Jean-Georges brings a Latin-inspired menu to Doha’s seaside terrace. Expect fish tacos, sizzling shrimp, guacamole and churros, with cocktails and live Latin music. As the afternoon progresses, the energy often builds into dancing between the tables – a lively option for families and groups alike. curiosadoha.com
