How to island hop like a pro in Terengganu (and how to fly there from MYR 267)
By Wan Muhammad Hafiz Bin Zainuddin
When it comes to Malaysia’s coastal treasures, Terengganu often tops the list—with good reason. From powdery beaches to turquoise waters teeming with marine life, this state on the east coast is a paradise for island hoppers.
Whether you’re planning your first trip or looking to explore beyond the usual spots, here’s how to island hop like a pro in Terengganu—complete with insider tips, must-visit islands, and clever ways to make the most of your domestic flights.
Timing is everything
The best time to visit Terengganu’s islands is between March and October, when the weather is dry, sunny, and sea conditions are ideal for boating and snorkelling. Most islands close during the monsoon season (November to February), so be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Avoid school holidays and public holidays for fewer crowds and better accommodation rates. Pick the right base
While Kuala Terengganu is the state capital, Merang Jetty and Kuala Besut Jetty are your gateways to the islands.
• Merang Jetty is ideal if you’re heading to Redang Island or Lang Tengah.
• Kuala Besut Jetty is the launch point for Perhentian Islands.
If you’re arriving by air, Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu connects you conveniently to the jetties.

Pack smart, not heavy
When island hopping, less is more. You’ll be boarding boats, walking sandy paths, and switching accommodations, so travel light.
Island hopping essentials:
• Quick-dry towel and swimsuits
• Waterproof phone pouch
• Insect repellent
• Water bottle
• Lightweight shoes or sandals
• Power bank
Book your boats in advance
Many island transfers are run by independent boat operators. While walk-ins are possible, pre-booking online or through your hotel can save you the hassle, especially during peak season.
You can also book full island-hopping tours that include multiple stops and snorkelling sessions. Look for combo packages that cover meals and equipment.
