7 Must-Do Things When You’re in Chiang Mai

By Wan Muhammad Hafiz Bin Zainuddin
If you think Chiang Mai is all about temples and elephants, you're not wrong… but you're not entirely right either. This city in northern Thailand has way more to offer than what’s on your typical touristy radar. From hidden cafes to adventurous treks, here’s a list of things you absolutely need to do when you’re in Chiang Mai.

Get lost in the Old City’s temples

Chiang Mai has over 300 temples (or wat), so yeah, they’re hard to miss. But instead of just ticking them off your list, why not spend a day wandering aimlessly? Start at Wat Chedi Luang for its massive ruined pagoda and end at Wat Phra Singh, which has some of the finest Lanna architecture in town. The best part? It’s all walkable.

Eat like a local at the Sunday Night Market

You haven’t been to Chiang Mai unless you’ve snacked your way through the Sunday Walking Street. From spicy khao soi to crispy spring rolls, this night market is a foodie’s heaven. Bonus tip: Keep an eye out for street performers who’ll probably serenade you as you munch away.

Channel your inner chef in a Thai Cooking Class

How about bringing a taste of Thailand back home? Chiang Mai’s cooking schools, like Thai Farm Cooking School and Baan Thai Cookery, are perfect for learning how to whip up classics like green curry and mango sticky rice. Pro tip: Most classes include a visit to the local market to buy fresh ingredients.

Take a day trip to Doi Suthep

Okay, we promised more than temples, but Doi Suthep is worth it. This hilltop temple gives you one of the most stunning panoramic views of Chiang Mai. It’s just a 30-minute drive from the city, but the ride up those winding mountain roads? Priceless.

Find zen in a Jungle Yoga Retreat

If all the hustle and bustle gets too much, escape to a yoga retreat. Places like Om Waters and The Yoga Tree offer peaceful getaways surrounded by lush nature.

Make friends with elephants at Elephant Nature Park

Chiang Mai is famous for its elephant sanctuaries, but you need to be picky. Opt for an ethical sanctuary like Elephant Nature Park, where the animals are well-treated and free from riding. Spend a day feeding and walking alongside these gentle giants—no chains, no rides, just pure elephant love.

Trek through hill tribes and waterfalls

Love the great outdoors? Chiang Mai has some epic treks. Head to the Mae Tang area for multi-day hikes that take you through lush jungles, scenic waterfalls, and remote hill tribe villages. Some treks even offer a homestay experience with local families.
