MPO Pays Tribute To Rodgers & Hammerstein
The 2017 season at the Dewan Filharmonik is coming to an end. But the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) is winding down the season in spectacular form.
It’s most recent concert, was a tribute to the musical duo of Rodgers & Hammerstein. The performance saw the MPO perform some of the best musical pieces created by the partnership of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein.
With resident conductor, Harish Shankar at the helm and the vocal talents of soprano Janet Lee, alto Samantha de Lune, bass Chi Hoe Mak, and tenors Izen Kong and Peter Ong, the concert showcased the collective works of the duo, which gifted them numerous awards and accolades.
With a packed audience cheering them on, the MPO and guests singers belted out songs from plays such as Oklahoma!, South Pacific and The Sound of Music. Apart from the aforementioned musicals, the MPO will also present the duo’s masterpieces taken from musicals such as Cinderella, The King & I and Carousel.
Set against a short play, the artists eased audiences into each number such as 'Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ and 'People Will Say We’re in Love' as well as 'Some Enchanted Evening' and 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' amongst many others throughout the duration of the concert.
To send audiences happily on their way following the end of the rousing performance, Shankar and the MPO along with the singers performed So Long, Farewell (from The Sound of Music) and You'll Never Walk Alone (from Carousel) respectively.
The Tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein was just one of the many unique concert performances that headlined the 2016/17 MPO calendar year. As the season reaches the home stretch, only a handful of concerts are left remaining. Do check out mpo.com.my for the complete list of concerts as well as the announcement of the new 2017/18 season, which will be announced later on.
