The best Kota Kinabalu beaches

By Emma Chong Johnston

1. Pulau Mamutik

For an easy, low-key daytrip

Heart Shape Island/Pulau Mamutik

The smallest island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Pulau Mamutik is often overlooked in favour of the nearby, more popular Pulau Manukan. But one thing in Mamutik’s favour (apart from its beautiful beaches), is the ease with which you can get there. Hop on a speedboat at Jesselton Point, and you can be sunbathing on the sands within 10 minutes. This is an island made for day-trips – there’s no hotel, but there are restaurants, a dive station, toilet and shower facilities and a small convenience store.

2. Tanjung Aru

For a family-friendly BBQ spot

You can’t go to Kota Kinabalu and not stop by Tanjung Aru at least one evening. This public beach is popular with locals and tourists, with families gathering in the evening to make use of the free barbecue facilities and to watch the spectacular sunsets. Browse the food stalls along the beach while you wait for the sunset, or head to any number of nearby seafood restaurants after the show is over.

3. UMS ODEC Beach

For those who don’t mind hiking for a reward

The jumble of letters may seem like a strange name for a beach – this is University Malaysia Sabah’s Outdoor Development Centre, but is also open to the public. The beach is maintained by the university, and also is the fitting location for the university’s conservation efforts, as well as activities and workshops around World Ocean Day. You do need to undergo a slight hike to get to the beach, but once you do, the reward is great: a secret-seeming stretch of coastline, complete with activities like horse riding, ATV riding, archery and fishing.

4. Pulau Kapalai

For those who want something different

Kapalai beach at Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia

Pulau Kapalai’s real secret is that it’s not actually an island – it’s a sandbank that disappears at high tide. Kapalai is a popular diving destination, but visit at low tide for one of the most unique beach experiences. The crystal clear waters and shallows also make it perfect for snorkelling if you’re not prepared to commit to a full-on diving holiday.

5. Pulau Dinawan

For those who want to enjoy a private island

It’s not always the first name on people’s lips, but Dinawan is just as beautiful as the more popular islands off Kota Kinabalu. This hidden island has the typical white sands and clear waters of the area, with a more secluded feel and additional activities for if/when you tire of the beach. Go jungle trekking or head on mangrove river cruise at dusk to enjoy the fireflies.
