Malawati Hill

At the top of the hill, with a great view of its coastline, lies Kota Melawati, an ancient fort built by the Malacca Sultanate during the early 16th century.

Kuala Selangor which eventually fell into hands of the Dutch in 1784, reinforced the fort with cannons and renamed it Fort Altingburg after Willem Arnold Alting, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1780 to 1797.

Today, visitors can still see the fort’s ruins with its cannons, the legendary 100-step stairway, the Royal Mausoleum, the Virgin’s Tomb, the fabled execution slab and an observatory tower (baitulhilal) that was built for sighting the new moon.

Jugra, Kuala Langat

Bandar Palace Jugra belongs to Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, the fifth Sultan of Selangor. He lived here for many years until his death in 1938. His grandson, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who was the eight Sultan of Selangor, was born in the palace in 1926.

The double-storey structure has many rooms, including a royal bath (Kolam Mandi Diraja), throne room (Balai Rong Seri), banquet room (Kamar Santap Diraja), bedrooms (Kamar Beradu), audience halls (Balai Mengadap), verandah (Sotoh), kitchen (Dapur) and a “forbidden garden” (Taman Larangan).

Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery was the brainchild of the Eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. Initially it was called “Muzium Kenangan” (Memorial Museum) and was built in 1988 at Jalan Kota, Kampung Jawa in Klang.

After H.R.H. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ascended the throne in 2001 as the Ninth Sultan of Selangor, he instructed that Sultan Suleiman Building which was built in 1909, be turned into the new Royal Gallery.
