By Going Places

1. Chee Boon Pin (@cheebp

Originally from Kuala Lumpur, this Singapore-based freelance photographer is a regular contributor to various top travel publications. With a personal interest in outdoor sports and adventure, BP has a particular knack for photographing people, and his ’gram features everything from Maori warriors in New Zealand to stunt bike performers in China.

2. Muhammad Hidayatullah (@muhdhidayatullah)

Formally trained in architecture, this self-taught photographer and videographer has made a name for himself with his distinctive style of storytelling, even picking up awards such as the 2012 Merdeka Video Challenge. From India to Iceland, his Instagram account takes you to far-flung destinations, with each image telling an evocative story of the people and places he encounters.

I just did the most craziest thing in my life. I bought 4 small houses in India. After more than 12 times coming here to India, I finally chose Jaisalmer as my first home. The reason why I bought the house is because I’ve always dreamt of having a small gateaway house here. I stumbled upon this house last year and it was perfect by the location, the feeling and the people itself. This house will help the local community to grow more in economy value. I’ve been running away from my architecture life for almost 7 years and I couldn’t believe I finally came back to appreciate and design my own house. 100% of this house is already completed and ready to stay here from October to March(During Winter Season in India). If you happen to be in Jaisalmer, you can stay here and search for Nika’s House Jaisalmer. My business partner Ratan will guide you to this place. Just let him know about Me 🙂 I know it’s not that much, but I believe it is a start for a new adventure in India and my life. Thank you for all the support all these years. You can ask me anything and make your stay memorable in Jaisalmer. https://abnb.me/5jUBDfyjf0

3. Razlan Yusof (@razylany)

With a preference for film photography, Razlan’s Instagram account is a nostalgia-tinged feed of black-and-white images featuring slice-of-life scenes, from a wedding to young cyclists riding through empty city streets.

4. Mohd Zarnizar (@zarnizar)

Mohd Zarnizar Mohammad, better known as Zarnizar to his followers, is a seasoned shutterbug who shares shots from around Malaysia but also the countries he visits, such as Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Turkey and Canada. While he uses professional equipment for his work, Zarnizar says his Instagram shots are mostly shot on his phone. That certainly gives us amateur phone photographers hope!

5. Tangerine Yin (@tangerine_yin)

Yin Tan is another photographer who shoots mostly on her phone. Her beautifully composed, wanderlust-inducing shots take you on journeys through the scorched landscapes of Ayers Rock in Australia to the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland.

6. RayRadzi (@rayyiuradzi)

Based in Kuala Lumpur, this documentary photographer hopes to evoke feelings of “intense delight and admiration” through his beautifully composed scenes of people and places. The colours of his images are deliberately muted, in wonderful counterpoint to the emotions one feels when exploring his feed.

7. Nana Safiana (@nanasafiana)

Born in Kuala Terengganu to immigrant parents who were Vietnam War refugees, Nana Safiana’s work explores themes surrounding empathy, love, survival, equity and empowerment. Her feed is a peek into the many different worlds people inhabit – from a close-up look at Thaipusam festivities in Kuala Lumpur to a young boy and his horse in Kyrgyzstan – often accompanied by long, introspective musings on the shot.

8. Lydia Tan (@lydia522)

With a spare, minimalist style, Lydia’s images play with lighting and composition. In fact, it’s often the spaces, rather than people, that tell a story – whether it’s a hand semi-shaded by the shadows of a sun-dappled tree or a solitary figure walking along an empty coastline in Queenstown, New Zealand.

9. Jordan Lye (@jordanlyephotography)

This Penang-based photographer, who also leads photo tours around the island, is best known for his landscape and architectural shots. Bursting with life and colour, his vivid images often offer a glimpse into less-known spots in Penang, such as the Air Itam water dam or the Penang clan jetties.

10. Trisha Toh (@trishates)

While technically not a travel photography account, this food-focused feed from food stylist Trisha Toh is so deliciously decadent that we can’t help but include it here. After all, the best way to get acquainted with a new culture is through its cuisine, right? Trisha’s distinctive style shines through in all her images, whether it’s a flat lay of her brunch spread or a commercial shoot of durian mooncakes.
