Living On Board
Established since 2009, Jumbo Stay offers a unique hostel experience where guests can spend the night in a real, seasoned jumbo jet – on the ground. The plane is a decommisioned jumbo jet model 747-212B made in 1976. With the brand new and modern interior decoration, Jumbo Stay is marketed towards aviation enthusiasts, families as well as business people.
The construction procedure consists of the removal of 450 seats including a thorough sanitisation. Built like any house, it is also subjected to the same demands on climate control and isolation. It adheres to all common energy standards while heating is achieved with an air conditioner inverter. It is then placed on a concrete foundation with the landing gear secured in two steel cradles, making it a spectacular landmark.
It features a café where guests can purchase breakfast, coffee, snacks, and warm meals. Guests can also walk along the left wing observation deck and experience the feeling of standing on top of a real jumbo jet's wing. There are different room categories, which accommodate one to three adults, as well as quad dormitory bed options with access to shared shower and toilet facilities. A few rooms have a private shower. Additionally, Jumbo Stay also offers a luxury suite in the converted cockpit with panoramic views of the airport.
“This is the budget alternative Arlanda has needed for quite a long time and as a new landmark”, says the owner of Jumbo Stay, Oscar Diös who previously owns and operates the hostel Uppsala Vandrarhem och Hotell. “I was getting ready to expand my hostel business in 2006 when I heard about an old wreck of an aircraft for sale at Arlanda. Since I had for a long time wanted to establish my business at Arlanda I didn’t hesitate for a second when this opportunity struck”, Oscar Diös explains.
Conveniently located 5-10 minutes away from the check-in counters at Arlanda Airport with shuttle bus service. Guests can easily book a night prior to departure schedules.
